Exterior Renovation Work That Holds Up

Exterior renovation covers everything from siding replacement and roofing to window recapping, exterior painting, and structural repairs that weatherproofing your home depends on. Greater Charlotte Contracting handles all of it across the Greater Charlotte region, and the owner has been doing this work hands-on for over 20 years. That's not a company stat. That's the person who shows up on your property, assesses the damage, and does the work. If your exterior is showing its age, call (704) 957-5323 and get an honest read on what actually needs to happen.

The word 'renovation' gets used loosely, and the difference matters. A repair fixes a specific failure. A renovation addresses the underlying condition, updates materials, and improves performance going forward. Most homeowners who call about one cracked siding panel end up needing a broader scope once someone gets up close and looks. That's not upselling. That's what twenty years of exterior renovation experience teaches you. Cost on exterior projects varies based on square footage, current material condition, access, what's underneath, and finish-level choices. Every job is different, contact Greater Charlotte Contracting for an accurate estimate.

What We Cover

Exterior Renovation Services We Handle Handle

One contractor for the full exterior, no coordinating five separate trades.

Roofing

Repair, replacement, and full tear-off. The owner's foundational 20-year specialty. If your roof has been 'fixed' before and still leaks, that's the call to make. See the full roofing service page for what we cover.

Siding Replacement and Repair

Cracked, warped, or rotted siding affects more than curb appeal. Water gets behind it. Inspect before you replace, and replace only what actually needs it. We'll tell you which is which.

Exterior Painting

Interior paint hides flaws. Exterior paint has to stand up to heat, rain, and freeze-thaw cycles. Preparation is the whole job. Skip it and you're repainting in two years.

Window Recapping and Trim

Custom-formed aluminum capping on windows and trim keeps water out at the joints where most exterior failures start. One of our customers noted in a review that no piece of trim left the job unless it was perfect. That's the standard.

Gutters

Often bundled with roofing and siding work because the drainage system is part of the same exterior system. A new roof with failing gutters doesn't protect the foundation the way it should.

Renovation vs. Repair: Know What You Actually Need

Most homeowners call about a specific symptom. A leak. A section of bad siding. Peeling paint on the trim. Sometimes it really is just that. Fix the thing, done. But in homes built before the 1990s, that one symptom is usually pointing at something broader. The siding that cracked did so because water got behind it. The roof that leaked did so because flashing was never installed correctly, not because the shingles failed. A contractor who fixes only what you point to isn't doing you a favor. The job of the person on your property is to look at the whole exterior, tell you what's actually causing the problem, and give you an honest scope. That's what 'renovation' means in practice: addressing the cause, not just the result.

Our Process

How an Exterior Renovation Project Runs

  1. 01

    Assessment First

The owner looks at the exterior before any scope is written. What you can see from the ground and what's actually happening behind the material are often different things. The estimate reflects what we find, itemized.

  2. 02

    Honest Scope, No Padding

Every line in the estimate is there because the work needs to happen. We don't add services to inflate the total, and we don't hide costs in vague line items. You know exactly what you're paying for before anything starts.

  3. 03

    On-Site Through Completion

The owner doesn't manage from an office. He's on-site, checking work, and making decisions. If something isn't right, it gets done over. We've done it before. We'll do it again if we have to.

What 17 Five-Star Reviews Tell You

Clint did such a great job helping us replace some outdoor vent covers. We had a basket style vent cover that had cracked and birds had nested inside. We had previously tried other handymen that would say they would come out and never showed because it was a small job. Clint came out very quickly, in the rain, and made it so much more efficient and esthetically pleasing. He was very affordable and professional. Clint is the MAN! He will now be our go to guy for other projects. I highly recommend him!

So, I just wanted to first of all thank Liz for the great referral to get my home project done. I was a bit nervous however after meeting Clinton, I can’t thank him and his team enough for the job well done to my satisfaction. Clinton listened to what I wanted and delivered just that. Clinton not only listened also very professional and knowledgeable. He gave me a step by step timeline and actually stuck to it. That’s very rare to find in a contractor however his team was awesome and went above and beyond my expectations with the attention to detail. So my rating is really a 10/10. I had a simple garage make over.

Let. Me . Tell . You . Something . Clint is GREAT! He’s done a major project on my home and I couldn’t ask for a better experience with a general contractor . Our current project is converting a half bath to a full bath downstairs . And as I’ve stated everything has been great and it’s not complete but I’m that pleased with the way things have come along to write a review . Communication is very important in things like these and he is nothing short of amazing with his communication and professionalism ! If there was ever a doubt on who to select for your next project , don’t doubt . Reach out to Greater Charlotte Contracting !

Had a great experience working with Clint and Greater Charlotte Contracting. He did great work in a reasonable amount of time and for a reasonable price. I have had a few home projects I’ve needed to complete within the last few months and he has not only provided me great service with these projects, but also has had great referrals for work outside of his scope of business. I would highly recommend anyone looking for work to be done in the Charlotte area to work with Greater Charlotte Contracting.

Why Exterior Work Gets Skipped (and What That Costs)

  1. 01

    Small Failures Compound Fast

A cracked section of siding in spring is water behind the sheathing by fall. By winter, you've got rot, potential mold, and a repair that costs three times what it would have.

  2. 02

    Interior Damage Follows Exterior Neglect

Exterior failures don't stay exterior. Water intrusion from roofing or siding problems leads to interior repairs, ceiling damage, and in some cases structural issues. Fixing the outside is cheaper than fixing what comes next.

  3. 03

Curb Appeal Is a Real Number

Appraisers see the exterior before they see anything else. So do buyers. A renovation that costs a fraction of a home's value can change its marketability substantially.

Quick Facts About Exterior Renovation

Structured for homeowners comparing options and for a straight answer.

  1. 01

Renovation addresses causes, repair addresses symptoms

Remodeling changes layout or function. Renovation restores and updates what's already there. A new roof is a renovation. Patching three shingles is a repair. Know which one your house actually needs.

  2. 02

Scope drives cost more than material choice

Square footage, substrate condition, and access all affect price more than siding brand. A premium product installed over rotted sheathing is still going to fail. What's underneath matters.

  3. 03

Most exterior failures start at transitions

Where roofing meets a wall, where siding meets a window, where a deck meets the house. These joints are where water finds its way in. They're also where cut corners show up first.

  4. 04

    Painting is prep, not product

The paint brand matters less than how the surface was prepared. Bare wood primed correctly will outlast painted-over-paint by years. Don't let a contractor skip the prep and charge you full price.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between remodeling and renovating a house exterior?
Remodeling changes the structure or layout, like adding a dormer or extending an overhang. Renovating restores and updates what's already there: new siding over sound framing, a roof replacement on an existing structure, recapped windows. Most homeowners need renovation, not remodeling. The distinction matters because it affects permits, cost, and timelines. Greater Charlotte Contracting can tell you which category your project falls into before any work begins.
How do I know if my siding needs repair or full replacement?
Isolated cracks or a small section of damage usually means repair. Widespread warping, multiple areas of moisture infiltration, or siding that's lost its integrity across a full elevation typically means replacement is more cost-effective. The honest answer depends on what's behind the siding, not just the surface. We assess the substrate before writing any scope. Every job is different, contact Greater Charlotte Contracting for an accurate estimate.
What causes exterior paint to fail prematurely?
Almost always prep. Paint applied over dirty, wet, or poorly primed surfaces doesn't bond correctly and starts peeling within a season or two. The second most common cause is moisture intrusion from the back side: if water is getting behind the siding, paint on the face can't hold. Fix the moisture problem first, then paint. Skipping that step means doing the job twice.
Does exterior renovation require permits in NC?
It depends on scope. A straight siding replacement or repaint generally doesn't require a permit in most NC jurisdictions. Structural changes, work that affects the building envelope significantly, or projects in HOA-governed communities may trigger permit or approval requirements. Greater Charlotte Contracting is licensed in NC and will tell you upfront what your specific project requires before work starts.
How long does an exterior renovation take from start to finish?
A siding replacement on a standard single-family home typically runs three to five days for the field work, depending on scope and substrate condition. Full exterior projects combining roofing, siding, and painting take longer, often one to two weeks depending on weather and material lead times. The owner gives you a timeline before the project starts and sticks to it. Multiple reviews specifically call this out.
Can roofing and siding be done at the same time?
Yes, and it often makes sense to do them together. Sequencing roofing before siding protects the work below. Staging both projects under one contractor also eliminates the coordination problem that comes from managing two separate crews. Greater Charlotte Contracting handles both, which means one scope, one estimate, and one point of accountability through the whole project.
